July 2007 - 34 Munros climbed this month

  Bla Bheinn
    Bla Bheinn

Date: 31st July

Buddies: Goldie

Meaning: Blue hill

Height: 928 metres

Time: 6.5 hrs

Climbed with Brother Goldie on a wet and windy day in Skye. Managed to find our way up a not too clear path in thick cloud (less than 30m visibility at times) way up was steep and disorientating- without the path we would have taken much longer to get to the top through constant second guessing. Still Brother Goldie found out why you should wash/ reproof your Paramo kit in the correct stuff regularly, and provided me with some amusing rants!

Buddies: Goldie

Meaning: Rocky peak of Fian warriors

Height: 967 metres

Time: 6 hrs

Aonach Eagach- Meall Dearg & Sgorr nam Fiannaidh. WOW! Climbed with Brother Goldie on a day forcast for heavy rain, but actually it turned out not too bad. A bit of an ambition for the pair of us this route. Great fun scrambling over the pinnacles and not as technically difficult as we'd imagined. A top day out- one of the best this year- can't wait to do it in sunshine with Ali.

Aonach Meadhoin, Sgurr a' Bhealaich Dheirg, Saileag, Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe, Sgurr na Carnach & Sgurr Fhuaran. Climbed first three solo and last three with Dad on a windless cloudy but very enjoyable day. Got to the first early so I took my time doing the next two as didn't want to hang around for Dad. Couldn't find Dad cos he'd pegged it straight up the side of the mountain and was at least half a km further up the ridge! Good work fella. Great day with awful midges coming off the hill. I've discovered thad Dad is a 'Route 1' man, he takes no prisoners with route choices.

Climbed Ciste Dhubh on its own and on my own as well! Slogged it up some lumpy boggy grassy slopes before entering the cloud. Ah summer is passed once more! Still at least it's not too windy. Checked out the route for tomorrow. I think I'll go a different way!

Climbed with Brother Ice. Absolutely flew up this 'un. Yomping up grassy slopes (and a bit of bog) in general sunshine. I forgot the camera but Brother Ice had his camera phone so everything's ok. Having said that what a day to forget the camera- 360 degree views of amazing hills and at least 3 lizards (2 of which I held- very cool) In a hurry to get back home so I can pick up Ali from the airport tomorrow yipee!

Meall a'Chrasgaidh, Sgurr nan Clach Gaela, Sgurr nan Each, Sgurr Breac & A' Chailleach. Climbed with Brother Ice after persistent rain throughout the night- not looking forward to this dreich day but it actually turned out pretty nice (in spells) Ice used my spare boots and they did ok (if causing a few blisters!) Slogged it up the first hill but after that the ridge did the rest and it was a very enjoyable walk. Getting over to Sgurr Breac was always a big ask but because we were ready for it it wasn't too bad. Glad to get back to the van at the end of the day though!

Eididh nan Clach Gaela, Meall nan Ceapraichean, Cona' Mheall & Beinn Dearg. Climbed with Brother Ice- undaunted by the 'Friday the 13th' date. Got rained on on the way up and on the way down, but curiously the weather was much better up top. Great day with Ice trying out his ML skills in nav and group management! Met Obi Wan and discovered Brother Ice's talent for frog spotting. Sadly we said an emotional farewell to Brother Ice's boots (ex-school shoes!) as they finally gave up the ghost. He shall remember them!

Climbed with Dad on a day of much improved weather. Glorious sunshine and not a drop of rain. Ah this is what summer is all about. The long walk in proved no problem but would be much quicker on bicycle as the track is generally very smooth. Went straight up the long shoulderabove the Alt Craoinidh straight to the summit where I found a very fetching pair of wooly mits. If anyone's lost them just get in touch- I'm looking forward to trying them out though. Dad saw his first and my second Red Squirrel.

Ben Wyvis- climbed with Dad on day once again of sunshine in the valley, cloud on them hills. Took a fairly direct ascent route up the SE shoulder and once height was gained, the walking was much easier. Would be great if you could see anything and if the temperature was above freezing (-7 degrees with wind chill according to mwis.org!) Still, the descent route was a lovely walk out by the Alt a'Gharbh Bhaid and made up for the earlier chillsomeness!

Started off lovely (and indeed the weather stayed in the valley!) but after summiting Beinn a'Chlachair clouds rolled in and I was cold and wet for the rest of the day. Today was the first day I've felt sorry for myself!?! I'm sure there would once again have been lovely views... Still, that's 3 more done. Onwards and upwards.
